Hemophilia
What is Hemophilia?
Hemophilia is a rare bleeding disorder classified by abnormal blood clotting or the absence of blood clotting. It ranges from mild to severe, and if not properly treated can be very dangerous to those with the disease, as undetected internal bleeding and bleeding in the joints can damage organs and tissues.
Hemophilia is very rare. Only about 20,000 Americans have the disorder. It affects mostly males, as it is an X chromosome linked condition. However, under rare and specific circumstances it can occur in a female. Hemophilia affects 1 in 5,000 male births in the US, approximately 400 babies are born with hemophilia each year. All races and economic groups are affected equally. People who have hemophilia and access to factor replacement therapy have a normal life expectancy.
The different types of Hemophilia
Bleeding disorders are treated by determining what protein is missing in the blood. Hemophilia is the most common and is classified as such:
Hemophilia A:
Occurs when factor VIII levels are deficient. Also known as “classic hemophilia.”
Hemophilia B:
Occurs when factor IX levels are deficient. Also known as “Christmas disease.”
Hemophilia C:
Occurs when factor XI levels are deficient.
Recognizing Signs of Hemophilia
Identifying potential signs of hemophilia is crucial for prompt diagnosis and management. Common indicators that may suggest the presence of hemophilia include:
- Prolonged bleeding from cuts, injuries, or after surgery
- Easy bruising or unexplained bruises
- Frequent nosebleeds that are difficult to stop
- Excessive bleeding from the mouth or gums
- Joint pain, swelling, or tightness, particularly after minor injuries or without apparent cause
- Blood in the urine or stool
- Excessive bleeding during dental procedures or tooth
- extractions
Family history of hemophilia or unexplained bleeding disorders
If you experience any of these signs or have concerns about your bleeding symptoms, consult a healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate testing.

Factor Replacement Therapy
Factor replacement therapy is a cornerstone in treating hemophilia, aimed at restoring the missing or deficient clotting factors in the blood. This therapy involves infusing specific clotting factors, such as Factor VIII or Factor IX, directly into the bloodstream to facilitate the blood clotting process. It is typically utilized to manage and treat bleeding episodes in individuals with hemophilia.
Our team of experienced healthcare professionals works closely with individuals with hemophilia to determine the appropriate dosage and frequency of factor infusions based on factors such as the severity of the condition, bleeding patterns, and lifestyle requirements.
Prophylactic Therapy
Prophylactic therapy is a proactive approach that involves regularly infusing clotting factors to prevent bleeding episodes and reduce the long-term complications associated with hemophilia. This preventive strategy is particularly beneficial for individuals with severe hemophilia or those prone to frequent bleeding episodes.
At River’s Edge Specialty Pharmacy, we use prophylactic therapy to empower individuals with hemophilia to take charge of their health. Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals collaborates with patients to develop personalized prophylactic treatment plans that align with their lifestyle and health goals.
